The Malemark Story
It’s never been easy to be a man. We’re supposed to be so many things: Protector, bread winner, father, brother, lover, mechanic, handyman, ruler of the free world. There are things men are good at, and some things we’re not.
Admit it, guys; communication is not our greatest talent.
Malemark was founded with the idea that men need a better way to communicate what we really want to say in a way we really want to say it. Flowers, candy and fluffy bunny greeting cards just don’t do it for most of us.
Now, don’t get us wrong, there’s a time and place for bunnies and flowers. But, the $74 billion greeting card industrial complex has pretty much ignored men. Don’t believe us? Just look at the selection of cards out there. You have a choice of poetry, nature scenes or fart jokes. Would you really enjoy giving a card like that to your wife or your friend?
In the beginning, there was the Caveman
On his lunch break, Malemark’s founder, Herman Deboard, sketched out a couple of card ideas on a napkin. He was looking for a way for men to make simple apologies for simple mistakes. The cards featured a caveman making an apology in a way only a guy would understand.
A few months later, Herman built an on-line store to sell a few of his original card ideas. The e-cards hit a nerve with men – and women – looking for greeting cards that were funny, but not over-the-top risqué or rude. A new kind of greeting card company was born.
Malemark.com currently offers more than 500 cards on-line that can be sent electronically, or as traditional printed cards. The original “Apologies” line is now one of a dozen lines of cards ranging from down-home wisdom to “intervention” cards for the dude who needs someone to reel him back to the man side(you know someone like that, don’t you?). More cards and other gifts are on way, driven by input from Malemark’s fans and customers.
A quart of oil and a greeting card
The next step in the evolution of the greeting card is to get Malemark cards into some nice racks; so to speak. The veteran-owned company is currently stocking a warehouse in Colorado Springs, putting finishing touches on a marketing strategy and reaching out to retailers. Soon, Malemark’s growing legion of fans will be able to pick up a card that’s by and for men right where they shop.
